President Uhuru Kenyatta has publicly taken aim at his Cabinet Secretaries, accusing them of slow delivery and of inflating ministry budgets.
A State House source, who asked not to be named, said the President was preparing a reshuffle and that several current ministers could lose their posts.
The source said Uhuru had been increasingly frustrated in Cabinet meetings before his criticism became public.
Speaking in Mombasa on Monday, Uhuru said he chose Chief of Kenya Defence Forces Samson Mwathethe to lead the Blue Economy Committee because he did not expect Cabinet Secretaries to move quickly enough.
“We were being told it’s a difficult journey. We started it with the General [Mwathethe]. I told him I want you to help me with this job. Because I knew if I go to the Cabinet Secretaries, I will be told about billions. I don’t know how many billions are required,”
The President’s remarks came amid reports that Transport CS James Macharia, Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri and Health CS Sicily Kariuki were among those facing possible removal.
