Mombasa Woman Representative Mishi Mboko has pushed back against claims that Raila Odinga was done politically ahead of the 2022 presidential race.
Speaking on Thursday, November 22, 2018, Mboko said the handshake between Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta did not stop the Opposition leader from seeking the presidency in 2022.
She also said the Building Bridges Initiative formed part of Odinga’s wider political strategy. “Raila has gone back to the drawing board for strategies,” Mboko said.
Her remarks came amid continued debate over Odinga’s next move after his appointment as the African Union’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development. Deputy President William Ruto and his allies had been urging him to leave active politics.
Mboko rejected that argument, saying the AU assignment did not bar Odinga from political engagement. “Hold your horses. He will soon unleash his plan for 2022,” she said.
Her comments also contrasted with Odinga’s own position two weeks earlier, when he said he would stay out of the 2022 succession contest so he could focus on his AU assignment as special envoy.
