Police officers are expected to appear in a new uniform during this year’s Jamhuri Day celebrations, marking the official rollout of the National Police Service attire.
The National Youth Service has been assigned to produce the uniforms, with officers said to be working through the night to meet the deadline before the launch.
Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said the arrangement would reduce the cost of making the uniform for more than 60,000 officers.
The deal was signed by Boinnet and acting NYS Director General Matilda Sakwa last month, ending lobbying by merchants who had wanted the tender. The amount police will pay for the work was not disclosed.
A committee known as the Uniform Committee settled on deep blue for General Duty personnel.
The process began last March, when President Uhuru Kenyatta was briefed on the proposed changes and approved them.
On September 13, Uhuru announced major changes in the police service and unveiled the uniforms. One of the changes was the conversion of Administration Police into Regular Police.
Boinnet has since instructed commanders to be ready for the changes within a month.
