People accused in the National Youth Service corruption case moved to court in 2018 seeking orders to stop politicians from commenting on the proceedings.
Through their lawyer, Assa Nyakundi, the suspects asked Anti-Corruption Magistrate Douglas Ogoti to bar public remarks they said were interfering with their right to a fair hearing. The case concerns allegations that Sh226 million was stolen from NYS.
Nyakundi told the court that the matter should be left to the judicial process and not debated in political forums. He argued that continued public discussion could prejudice the trial.
The application followed remarks by President Uhuru Kenyatta at an NYS recruit pass-out parade in Gilgil, where he said those responsible for the theft should be punished and forced to return the money. He also said the government would do everything within its powers to recover the funds.
“We will do everything in our power to ensure that the culpable pay the price and return the stolen resources.”
The suspects named in the case included former Youth PS Lillian Omollo and former NYS Director General Richard Ndubai.
