Bankers were preparing to demonstrate in Nairobi’s CBD on 27 November 2017 as pressure intensified on BIFU secretary general Isaiah Kubai to step down over allegations of abuse of office and impunity.
A notice signed by the Sub-County Police Commander, Central, said the protest would run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. along Moi Avenue, starting at the Archives building and ending at Sonalux House.
The grievances raised by the bankers included claims that union officials had been sacked in the KCB dispute, that BIFU leadership had colluded with bank management on medical cover and appraisal matters, and that employees’ benefits had been denied at Barclays, now ABSA.
They also accused the union of failing to produce audited books of account, failing to hold an AGM for members, and failing to conduct national elections for the past 30 years.
Other complaints cited in the protest notice included the relocation of agent banking inside banks, the outsourcing of employment through Share Logic, and the failure to intervene in the retrenchment of NBK staff and the termination of KCB Shares department employees.
The original report also said a previous protest had been held outside KCB Kencom, where Kubai was accused of working with KCB management to frustrate employees.
