The Cabinet has approved the purchase of two million bags of maize from local farmers at Sh2,300 per bag.
The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Nairobi and attended by Deputy President William Ruto. The Ministry of Agriculture had proposed the purchase as part of government efforts to support local farmers.
The move comes after the President urged urgent action to shield maize farmers from market problems, including delayed payments.
For growers who have complained about the lack of a reliable local market, the approval offers immediate relief and a clearer path to selling their crop.
