Published on July 19, 2019, a report by the Kakamega County Assembly Members (MCAs) revealed that the county's hospitals were facing a crisis due to mismanagement and the mass exodus of doctors and nurses.
Isukha South Ward Representative Farouk Machanje stated that the endless supremacy wrangles between the Health Executive and the Health Chief Officer had plunged the sector into a huge mess.
Mr. Machanje added that the ward reps would impeach Ms. Okumu if Governor Oparanya failed to take action. The MCAs also questioned a decision by the Executive to divert a conditional grant of Sh467 million released by the World Bank to give the Level Five hospital a face-lift.
They also expressed concern over the withholding of millions of shillings contributed through the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), saying it was hurting operations at the facility.
Butsotso South MCA Walter Andati said the detention of patients over unpaid bills was not helping matters. Kenya National Union of Nurses Secretary General Seth Panyako stated that nurses were quitting due to frustration.
