France and Japan moved quickly to steady the Renault-Nissan alliance after Carlos Ghosn was ousted as Nissan chairman, with both governments publicly backing the partnership.

French economy minister Bruno Le Maire and Japanese counterpart Hiroshige Seko met in Paris and issued a joint statement that expressed strong support for the alliance and a shared wish to keep the cooperation intact.

Ghosn had been the driving force behind the tie-up and had pushed for a deeper relationship between Renault and Nissan, including the possibility of a full merger. That idea faced significant resistance inside Nissan.

The statement was meant to signal continuity at a moment of uncertainty for one of the auto industry’s most important cross-border partnerships.
