Singer, songwriter and self-taught guitarist Wanja Wohoro treated Nairobi fans to a live set at Alliance Francaise Gardens on Wednesday night, offering an early taste of her debut album Matriach.
Wohoro said the album is built around the experience of being a woman in the 21st century, alongside broader stories about life.
She said the garden setting created a different atmosphere from the bars, concerts and restaurant gigs where she has often performed, describing the crowd as more engaged and energetic.
The new album includes collaborations with Tetu Shani, Nairobi Horns Project and Kato Change, who also joined her on stage during the performance.
Wohoro’s sound draws from artists such as Amy Winehouse, Lianne La Havas and Ella Fitzgerald.
