Central Organisation of Trade Unions Secretary General Francis Atwoli has renewed his call for President Uhuru Kenyatta to remain in government after his term ends in 2022.
Atwoli made the remarks in Nairobi on Thursday, November 22, 2018, while meeting the Building Bridges Initiative team. He said the Constitution should be amended to create the office of Prime Minister, and argued that Uhuru should be the first person to hold it after leaving the presidency.
He defended his position by saying some people had mocked him for suggesting that the President should not step aside after 2022, adding that Uhuru was still young. Atwoli also said that if people from Central wanted him, there could be a government arrangement that accommodated him.
Linking his argument to the 2013 post-election dispute, Atwoli said the crisis might have been avoided if Kenya had not operated under a winner-takes-all political system.
He further proposed six executive positions, saying such a structure would make everyone happy.
