Jumia said its Black Friday campaign would combine steep discounts, app-only flash sales and a live treasure hunt for two flagship phones priced at Ksh5.
The retailer said the promotion would begin on Thursday 22 at 11:00 PM across its social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. Customers were told to follow team updates on WhatsApp for clues leading to the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and iPhone X offers.
According to the company, the Black Friday launch would run into a midnight sale, with additional deals scheduled for Friday 23 November 2018. Jumia Managing Director Sam Chappatte said the company expected thousands of new offers and its biggest flash sale to date.
Among the grocery offers, Jumia said customers in Nairobi would get free delivery on a 2kg packet of Jogoo Unga when ordering through the Jumia app. The company also listed Sun Rice 2kg Basmati Rice at Ksh99, down from Ksh500, and sugar at Ksh50, down from Ksh215.
Jumia said 1,000 units of Jogoo Unga would be sold at Ksh20 at 9:00 AM on Friday. Other flash-sale items included a 55-inch Mooka Smart TV at Ksh19,999 from Ksh44,100, an Oppo F9 64GB 4G phone at Ksh9,999 from Ksh35,000, an HP Celeron laptop at Ksh21,999, and a Bruhm four-gas-burner standing cooker at Ksh10,990.
The retailer also listed discounts of up to 50 percent on Pampers and Huggies, up to 65 percent on LC Waikiki clothing, and up to 50 percent on L’Oréal products. It said six packs of Tusker and Desperados would sell for Ksh199, down from Ksh1,150.
Jumia said the treasure hunt would be available only on the app and that the phones would be offered at different times on Friday, including 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:30 PM and 5:00 PM. The company also said Visa card users could receive up to Ksh250 off delivery, with no transaction cost.
The retailer warned that stocks were limited and urged customers to download the app early to access the offers.
