Some Kenyan MPs say they are uneasy about supporting a push to introduce sex education in schools, warning that the issue could cost them votes in future elections.
The concern, according to the legislators, is that the debate is highly sensitive in many constituencies, especially rural areas where voters may oppose the proposal.
“As much as we want to save our teenagers from early pregnancies, this story is dicey to some of us who are from rural constituencies,” said Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro.
Civil society groups have been lobbying lawmakers to back a bill meant to help reduce teenage pregnancies, unsafe abortions and HIV.
