Kenya’s First Lady, Margaret Kenyatta, hosted Mozambique First Lady Isaura Nyusi and Ida Odinga at a State House banquet on Thursday evening, ahead of a trip to Nyanza.
The dinner drew notice because Rachel Ruto, the Deputy President’s wife, was not among those present. The report said she would otherwise have been expected at the event.
Margaret and Ida used the occasion to persuade Nyusi to join them on the Kisumu visit, where Margaret was due to launch the Beyond Zero Medical Safari, Kisumu Chapter.
A statement from Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o’s communication unit said:
“Accompanying H.E Margaret Kenyatta will be the First Lady of Mozambique H.E Isaura Ferrão Nyusi,”
Beyond Zero was launched by Margaret in January 2014 with the stated aim of ensuring that no mother or child dies before, during or after birth. By 2018, the initiative had already received international recognition.
