A man accused of handling zebra meat worth Sh83,200 has been charged in Nakuru after Kenya Wildlife Service officers allegedly found him with 208 kilograms at Soysambu ranch in Mbaruk, Gilgil.
Samuel Gitome Gichura appeared before Chief Magistrate Josephat Kalo and denied the charge of possessing bush meat without a permit from the Kenya Wildlife Service.
Prosecutors told the court that the meat had been packed in eight gunny bags and was meant to be moved on a motorcycle to an unknown destination.
According to the KWS account, Gitome was arrested on Wednesday while preparing the meat with two other people who escaped.
The officers said the meat was headed for Gilgil and Nakuru towns, where it was allegedly to be sold to unsuspecting customers.
The court released Gitome on Sh1 million bond with a surety of a similar amount, or an alternative cash bail of Sh500,000.
The case will be mentioned on Friday.
