HMD Global has introduced the Nokia 5.1 Plus to the Kenyan market, with selected retailers set to sell the handset from Ksh 24,000.
The company is pitching the device as a mid-range phone built for gaming, entertainment and mobile photography. It is powered by the MediaTek Helio P60 chipset and comes with AI imaging features, face recognition and fingerprint security.
Gopher Ogembo, Business Manager, East Africa, HMD Global, said the company wanted to make performance and imaging features available to a wider audience.
“With the Nokia 5.1 Plus we wanted to bring exciting gaming and entertainment experiences closer to a wider group of fans. Our vision was to deliver performance, AI imaging and a contemporary design in an accessible device, so that more people can play mobile games, binge-watch their favourite series and capture great content. The Nokia 5.1 Plus is for our tech-savvy fans who love finding the best price-performance combination,” said Gopher Ogembo, Business Manager, East Africa, HMD Global.
The phone features a 5.8-inch edge-to-edge notched display, 2.5D curved glass on the front and back, and a metal frame. HMD Global says the handset has been tested for durability, including extreme temperatures and drops.
On the camera side, the Nokia 5.1 Plus carries a dual 13MP/5MP rear setup with electronic video stabilisation, phase detection autofocus and portrait effects such as bokeh blur and portrait lighting.
The device is part of the Android One programme, which means it will receive three years of monthly security patches and two years of operating system updates after launch. It ships with Android Oreo out of the box and is ready for Android Pie.
HMD Global also says the phone includes Google services such as Google Assistant and Google Photos, with free unlimited high-quality photo storage, alongside a trimmed set of pre-loaded apps to preserve battery and storage space.
