The family of South Sudanese businessman Lual Malong Yor Jnr says he went missing in Kampala after men in military uniform took him from a hotel room in Kabalagala, a suburb of the Ugandan capital.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigirye told the Daily Monitor that the family filed a complaint at Kabalagala Police Station and said they had not heard from him since November 14.
According to the report, the men arrived in two vehicles before taking him away. Police said they were checking the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We are investigating the circumstances under which he was picked up. His brother reported (the matter) to police. I can confirm he is not in our custody,” Owoyesigirye said.
The disappearance was first reported by Juba-based Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday through its website.
A family member said they did not know who took him from the hotel and insisted he had no dispute with the Ugandan government.
“We do not know who abducted him from the hotel. What we know is that Lual has no problem with the government of Uganda. We are very concerned as his family members.”
Malong Jr, 30, became widely known after posting photos and videos of himself appearing to swim in a pile of US dollar bills on Facebook. He later appeared on Jeff Koinange Live, where he spoke about his wealth and lifestyle.
Days later in Nairobi, he offered to fund the activities of the Kenya University Students’ Organisation (Kuso).
