Kiambu Golf Club is set for a busy 2018 Captain’s Prize this weekend as club captain Pius Mworia brings his term to a close at the par-72 course.
The club’s recent Doctors tournament produced a strong showing from John Ngure, who carded a one-over-par 73 off handicap four to win the overall title on nett 69. Patrick Wanjohi, playing off handicap 12, finished second overall on countback and took the men’s first prize. Joseph Muchigi, off 15, followed on nett 70 after also edging Fredrick Njoroge on countback. Michael Ngene claimed the gross title with a four-over-par 76.
About 150 players have been entered for the two-day event, with the opening round scheduled for Friday. Sponsors named for the tournament include Kenya Wines Agency (KWAL), Air Mauritius, Tropikal Brands, Kags Trading, Davis Court Nyeri, Ceragem, Consignia and Buens Lugar.
Mworia said the club had made arrangements to keep play moving on the hilly course, which he described as being in excellent condition. He also said golfers who finish exhausted will be offered free massage services.
The outgoing captain thanked club members and sponsors for supporting tournaments at Kiambu during the year. “I have been very lack to have received a lot of support from our club members and I sincerely thank them as well as all the corporates who have visited Kiambu this year,” he said.
At Kenya Railway Golf Club, more than 100 golfers are due for the Captain’s Prize on Friday and Saturday. The event is sponsored by Madison Insurance, Sidian Bank and Laser Insurance Brokers.
The Railway field includes professionals Alfred Nandwa and Ben Okello, together with invited players John Kiondo of Machakos, John Kagiri of Limuru, Kevin Mabele of Kenya Air Force, John Wangai of Sigona and Ken Bollo of Royal. The club’s elite group will also feature Samuel Njoroge, George Felix, Anthony Mwaura, John Lejirmah and former Kenya Golf Union chairman Anthony Muhoro.
Other Captain’s Prize events are scheduled for Royal and Muthaiga, while Vet Lab Sports Club will host the Vice Chairman’s Putter and Thika Sports Club the CBA tournament.
Ruiru Sports Club is also staging another full weekend of golf as Daraja Capital returns for the fourth straight year. The Nairobi-based financial services firm expects at least 180 golfers, with Friday’s curtain-raiser featuring about 70 caddies and the top 16 advancing to Saturday’s main competition.
Ruiru captain Peter Mwaura said the tournament has drawn leading golfers, while Daraja Capital managing director Peter Njinu said the company wants to make the event more exciting and help grow golf in Kenya. He said there are at least 22 prize categories on offer.
Recent form points to Ben Omondi, Phillip Karoki, Joseph Mugo, Joseph Kibui and John Kibui among the men likely to contend, while Winnie Mwangi and Winnie Kamau are expected to challenge in the ladies’ section.
