The Sh6.5 billion Kwa Jomvu-Makupa Causeway is now 40 per cent complete, according to the government, as Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia pressed the contractor to keep the project on schedule.
Macharia said the causeway is a key link for traffic heading to Mombasa port, Moi International Airport and the movement of goods from inland counties. He said the project is meant to improve travel across the transport network serving the coast.
He made the remarks during the groundbreaking for the refurbishment of Moi International Airport, where he said the government wants smoother movement across road, rail and air transport.
The Cabinet Secretary pointed to the new Changamwe Roundabout-Airport Road as an example of the changes already taking shape. He said it has reduced travel time between the Mombasa International Airport, the Standard Gauge Railway terminus and the city centre.
The causeway forms part of the wider Mombasa-Mariakani highway project, which President Uhuru Kenyatta officially launched last year.
Work on the road has already affected traffic at Kibarani. Once complete, the six-lane expansion is expected to ease movement of people and goods, support tourism and improve efficiency at the Port of Mombasa.
