Nissan Motor’s board has voted to remove Carlos Ghosn as chairman after his arrest, a move that deepens the crisis around one of Japan’s best-known corporate figures.
The decision also raises new uncertainty over the Renault-Nissan alliance, which Ghosn helped shape and had pushed toward a closer tie-up despite resistance inside Nissan. Ghosn is also chairman and chief executive of Renault.
The board separately voted to remove Greg Kelly as representative director, according to the Nikkei newspaper.
Nissan said on Monday that an internal investigation, triggered by a tip-off from an informant, found alleged wrongdoing by Ghosn. The company said the conduct included personal use of company money and the under-reporting of his earnings for years.
Tokyo prosecutors have accused Ghosn and Kelly of financial misconduct, and both remain in custody. Neither man has commented on the allegations, and Reuters said it had not been able to reach them. A Nissan spokesman declined to comment.
The developments came in 2018, as the case sent shockwaves through the automaker and its corporate alliance.
