Nairobi County Shuts Down Meat Outlets Over Excess Preservatives

On July 19, 2019, Nairobi county government took drastic measures to protect consumers from unscrupulous traders by shutting down over six meat outlets in six major supermarkets.

The move came after samples revealed alarming levels of excess preservatives in the meat, posing a significant risk to public health.

According to Governor Mike Sonko, the county health officers have been directed to intensify the crackdown and ensure that consumers are protected from traders who prioritize profits over safety.

The affected supermarkets include The Point Naivas Limited Buruburu, Muthaiga Fine Meat Limited, Naivas Gateway Mall, and others, with some samples showing as high as 63,000 milligrams per kilogram of Sodium Metabisulphite preservative.

Executive member for health Mohamed Dagane stated that the maximum required limit for Sodium Metabisulphite preservative is 500 milligrams per kilogram, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
