Egypt is placed first in the source ranking of Africa’s strongest militaries, with the list pointing to its large force size and extensive equipment. The report says the country has nearly 500,000 soldiers, more than 10,000 armored vehicles, over 60,000 logistics vehicles and more than 900 aircraft.
Algeria comes second, with the source crediting investment across its army, air force and navy. It says the country has more than 127,000 active front-line personnel and nearly 2,000 armored vehicles.
Ethiopia is ranked third. The report notes that, as a landlocked country, it does not maintain a navy, but it has built up a strong army and air force backed by its large population.
South Africa is listed fourth. The source says the country’s military is supported by modern technology and weaponry, and that it has about 100,000 active personnel.
Nigeria takes fifth place. The report says the West African country has more than 1,400 armored vehicles, 360 tanks, 6,000 logistical vehicles, nearly 300 aircraft and 25 naval vessels.
Kenya is ranked sixth. The source describes the country as an important contributor to international peacekeeping missions and says its military training and political stability have strengthened its forces. It also says that training has helped Kenya keep Al-Shabab from its borders.
Morocco is placed seventh, with the report citing more than 2,120 armored vehicles, 1,348 tanks, 323 aircraft and 121 naval assets. It also says the country has taken part in several peacekeeping projects.
Tunisia appears eighth on the list. The source says its armed forces include three mechanized brigades, one Saharan territorial group, one special forces group and one military police regiment. It adds that Tunisia has more than 900 armored vehicles, 350 tanks, 139 aircraft and 50 naval units.
Angola is ranked ninth. The report says the country has an army, navy and air force, along with more than 920 armored vehicles, 140 tanks, 270 aircraft and 56 naval craft.
Libya closes the list in tenth place. The source says its strength comes from heavy equipment despite having few troops, including more than 2,500 armored vehicles, 500 tanks, 600 towed artillery pieces and 6,500 logistical vehicles.
