Egypt is ranked as Africa’s strongest army in the source report, with its advantage tied to scale and equipment. The ranking places Algeria second, followed by Ethiopia, South Africa and Nigeria among the continent’s most capable forces.
The report says Egypt has nearly 500,000 army personnel, more than 10,000 armored fighting vehicles, 60,000 logistical vehicles and 900 aircraft. Algeria is described as having more than 127,000 active front-line troops and nearly 2,000 armored fighting vehicles, alongside a developed air force and navy.
Ethiopia appears third on the list. The report notes that, as a landlocked country, it has not invested in a navy to the same extent, but has built up its army and air force with support from its large population.
South Africa is placed fourth. The report points to its economic strength and says its aircraft and naval vessels are well equipped with modern technology, even though it has fewer than 100,000 active front-line personnel.
Nigeria is ranked fifth. The report links its military capacity to its oil wealth and says it has more than 1,400 armored vehicles, 360 tanks, 6,000 logistical vehicles, nearly 300 aircraft and 25 naval vessels.
Kenya is listed sixth, with the report highlighting its role in international peacekeeping missions and its training standards. It also says Kenyan forces have pushed back Al-Shabaab from its borders.
Morocco comes seventh, with the report citing 2,120 armored fighting vehicles, 1,348 tanks, 323 aircraft and 121 naval assets. Tunisia is placed eighth and described as having three mechanized brigades, one Saharan territorial group, one special forces group and one military police regiment, along with 900 armored fighting vehicles, 350 tanks, 139 aircraft and a naval strength of 50.
Angola is ranked ninth. The report says its army, navy and air force include 920 armored fighting vehicles, 140 tanks, 270 aircraft and 56 naval craft. Libya closes the top ten, with the report saying its strength lies in equipment stockpiles that include 2,500 armored fighting vehicles, 500 tanks, 600 towed artillery pieces and 6,500 logistical vehicles.
