Former judge and opposition figure Birtukan Mideksa has been sworn in as the head of Ethiopia’s electoral board.
The appointment places one of the country’s best-known opposition voices in charge of a key public institution, and it marks another prominent woman taking a senior state role.
Birtukan returned to Ethiopia earlier this month after spending seven years in exile in the US.
She had been among dozens of opposition leaders jailed after the disputed 2005 elections, a crisis that left hundreds of people dead.
