Uganda police are investigating the disappearance of South Sudanese businessman Lual Malong Jr after his family reported that he had not been seen since November 14.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the report was filed at Kabalagala Police Station by Malong Jr’s family. According to the family, he was taken from his hotel room in Kabalagala, a Kampala suburb, by people in military uniform who arrived in two vehicles.
Owoyesigyire said police were trying to establish the circumstances of the reported pickup and were working with other security agencies. He also said Malong Jr was not in police custody.
The disappearance was first reported by Radio Tamazuj, which quoted a relative saying hotel staff said Malong had been picked up by UPDF soldiers in two vehicles. The relative said the family did not know who took him and insisted he had no known dispute with the Ugandan government.
Brigadier Richard Karemire, the Uganda People's Defence Force spokesperson, denied that the army was holding Malong Jr. “I have no information about that individual being held by the UPDF,” he said.
The hotel where Malong Jr was staying has not been named publicly.
