Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Starehe MP Charles Njagua were required to apologize before they could be allowed back into the chambers after their confrontation inside Parliament.
The powers and privileges committee said the two legislators had to account for their conduct before resuming their duties as members of the House. Owino, however, drew laughter when he denied slapping Njagua and said, “I did not slap Jaguar, his cheek moved toward my hand.”
Speaker Moses Cheboi was not amused by the joke and ordered Owino to repeat the apology in serious terms. He was told to withdraw the playful version and restate it properly.
The dispute was linked to events in 2017, after the disputed August 1 elections, when Babu Owino failed to recognize President Uhuru Kenyatta as the elected President in October 2017. In his apology, Charles Njagua Kanyi urged Owino to respect the President.
Although the two MPs had already apologized to each other and reconciled, the committee maintained that a formal apology was still necessary because of what happened in the House.
