Wananchi Group Kenya has begun rolling out Zuku Fiber in Nakuru as part of a wider push to expand its footprint beyond Nairobi and Mombasa. The company says Nakuru is its third city in the regional expansion plan, with Naivasha, Kisumu and Thika next in line.
The service launch adds to Zuku’s fiber-to-the-home base of more than 400,000 homes in Kenya. In Nakuru, customers are being offered the company’s Triple Play package, which combines home internet, digital television and telephone services.
Wananchi Group Chief Executive Officer Thomas Hintze said the move was part of the company’s broader expansion strategy in Kenya and the region. He said Zuku Fiber had already grown its network coverage in the country and had the largest coverage in Nairobi and Mombasa, adding that the company expanded further last year to Dar-es-Salaam and Kampala.
For the Nakuru rollout, the first 100 customers will receive free digital television services for one year and a free home telephone. Customers who sign up in 2018 will also get discounted Zuku Fiber Triple Play packages until the end of the year.
At launch, the service is available at the Zuku Fiber shop at Westside Mall, at branded tents and through uniformed sales representatives. Coverage in Nakuru initially includes Naka 1 and Naka 2 within the Free Area / Area 58, with further expansion planned to other residential areas.
Zuku Fiber says its Triple Play internet speeds go up to 250Mbps, with packages starting at 5, 10, 30, 50, 100 and 250Mbps. Its digital TV offering includes Kenyan free-to-air channels and more than 126 channels covering news, sports, movies, lifestyle, documentaries and entertainment. The home telephone service offers local calling rates of Ksh 1 to all networks.
Wananchi Group Holdings, established in 2008, operates in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia.
