On July 18, 2019, a Form One student at St Claire Kioge Girls High School in Nyakoe, Kisii County, died in hospital after a night of intense pain.

Belvin Kerubo, a student at the school, had been struggling with pain for hours on Wednesday night, coughing, spitting, and vomiting blood. Despite the efforts of her colleagues, who stayed awake to give her company, she eventually succumbed to her illness.

According to a student at the school, Belvin initially complained of pain, but when she started asking for food and water, her classmates tried to call their teachers, but were unable to wake them up. The school matron did, however, give her some medicine.

The students believe that Belvin died in school, but Kitutu Central director of Education Paul Ongoi stated that he was informed that she died in hospital.
