A section of matatu operators has threatened to withdraw from the Matatu Owners Association, saying the body no longer reflects their interests.
The groups named in the dispute include the Matatu Welfare Association, Matatu Travellers Vehicles Association, Mount Kenya Association, Association of Bus Operators Kenya and Association of Matatu Operators.
Calvin Nyaure, chairman of the Association of Motor Vehicle Transporters, said the move is driven by claims that the association is being controlled by cartels.
He also said the fallout has been worsened by the crackdown on public service vehicles in 2018, which he said has seen 14-seater and 33-seater vehicles forced off the roads without the operators’ involvement.
The operators are asking the government to explain why they are being denied smooth access to operate, saying they have already complied with the Michuki Rule.
