Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia inspected the ongoing construction of Lot 1 of the Mombasa-Mariakani road on Tuesday, as the government pushed ahead with a major upgrade of the corridor.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is overseeing the rehabilitation and expansion of the 41.7 km stretch between Mombasa and Mariakani. The project sits on the Northern Road Corridor, one of the country’s key transport routes.
The road is a critical link between the Port of Mombasa and landlocked countries in the region, including Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. It also serves South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and parts of northern Tanzania.
