Police hunt gunmen after Italian aid worker is abducted in Chakama, Kilifi

Security agencies were searching for armed men who attacked Chakama Trading Centre in Kilifi County on Tuesday night, abducted a 23-year-old Italian aid worker, and injured five other people, including a 10-year-old boy.

The attack happened in Chakama, Makongeni sub-location, about 80 kilometres west of Malindi town. According to sources, the woman was taken from her hotel room and the attackers were believed to be Al-Shabaab terrorists.

Police confirmed the incident and said the injured were taken to Malindi Sub-County Hospital. Officers were also deployed to pursue the attackers and try to recover the victim.

“The National Police Service wishes to inform the public that last evening at about 8pm, a gang of men armed with AK 47 rifles attacked Chakama Trading centre in Chakama, Makongeni sub location in Kilifi County, about 80 kilometres west of Malindi town,” “We assure the public that we are sparing no effort in tracking down the criminals and rescue the victim,”

The kidnapped woman was said to be a volunteer with Africa Milele Onlus, a non-governmental organisation operating in the area.
