Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has given police Sh500,000 after officers confronted an armed gang accused of terrorizing residents in Kayole.
The reward came after a video of young men carrying guns and robbing a shop spread online and drew the governor’s attention.
Sonko said the suspects ran away after the police operation. He also said some members of the group had already responded to his earlier warning to hand over their weapons.
In a statement, Sonko said he had posted the video on 8 November at 4.51am and warned the men that “their days were numbered.” He added that on 10 November, while attending a fundraising in Matopeni, Kayole, for Harrison Kinyanjui Karanja, who had been shot and seriously injured, he gave armed gang members seven days to surrender all guns and stop attacking innocent residents.
He said those who ignored the warning and were later captured on CCTV robbing traders at gunpoint had “got the good price they got.” Sonko praised the officers involved and said the Sh500,000 reward was for their work.
He also urged people linked to illegal groups to surrender their firearms to area chiefs or their Members of County Assemblies. Sonko said his administration would not back down in the fight against crime in Nairobi.
