KTN news anchor Ben Kitili has responded to the backlash over his wedding to longtime partner Amina Mude, saying he has forgiven critics but will defend his family if anyone goes too far.
The remarks came after the couple held a low-key invite-only ceremony at the Attorney General’s Chambers and later hosted a reception at a Nairobi hotel over the weekend.
Reaction to the Christian-Muslim union ¶
The wedding drew mixed reactions online, with some social media users questioning the union between a Christian man and a Muslim woman.
One critic, Abdkadir Mohammed, said: “The Muslim population has every right to be concerned about Islamic issues happening in our country and as such we have every right to condemn any act that violates our sharia which prohibits a Muslim woman from marrying a Christian man,”
Kitili answered in a social media post that began: “In marriage, God is more important than religion.”
He added: “To those who are not so welcoming, we forgive you… you have a constitutional right to your opinion… however, should any of you cross the line against the law – as I said, I ‘ll protect my family with my all,”
Family support and personal background ¶
Kitili, a Daystar University alumnus, also said Amina’s family had endorsed the marriage. He thanked his Muslim and Somali in-laws, especially those in Wajir, for their reception and kind words.
The couple had been living together since 2015 and have a three-year-old daughter.
