Naivas Supermarket has taken a precautionary measure by suspending the sale of red meat in all its stores countrywide following concerns over contamination.
The decision comes after Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua shut down meat sections of all Naivas Supermarket outlets in Machakos County on Thursday, citing a laboratory test that allegedly found a harmful additive in a sample of meat sold at Naivas Supermarket at Gateway Mall in Mavoko.
Naivas has assured customers that their welfare remains paramount and that the company does not use or condone the use of any chemical preservatives for meat products.
Willy Kimani, the Naivas Chief Commercial Officer, stated that the whole stock of red meat will be subjected to a thorough independent lab test and a step-by-step verification of each participant along the whole meat value chain.
He further added that the outlet is cooperating with national and county government agencies to address the issue and will take strong legal action against anybody found to have supplied contaminated meat to Naivas.
Naivas has also been affected in Nairobi where Governor Mike Sonko closed down meat outlets in six major supermarkets, including Naivas limited Buruburu, Muthaiga fine Meat Limited, and Tuskys Kenyatta Avenue, after samples revealed excess preservatives in the meat.
