On Wednesday, November 21, 2018, Joseph Irungu, also known as Jowie, was transferred from Industrial Area Remand Prison to Kamiti Maximum Prison as he remained the main suspect in the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.
Much of Jowie’s inner circle had reportedly drifted away after his arrest, but city male socialite Joe Muchiri said he had continued to stand by him. Muchiri visited him at Kamiti and later said the experience showed him that the facility is extremely tough.
According to Joe Muchiri, “Kamiti is not a joke.”
The remarks came after his visit to the prison, where Jowie was being held following the transfer. The case had already drawn intense public attention because of the brutal killing of Monica Kimani and the high-profile nature of the suspect.
Muchiri’s comments were shared on social media, where he also indicated that conditions at Kamiti were difficult. Nyakundi Report notes that the post reflected the strain around Jowie’s detention at the time.
