On Wednesday, November 21, 2018, a Zambian woman drew attention online after revealing that she was taking her husband to Dubai to watch the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as part of his 30th birthday celebration.
She shared photos of the couple’s trip and the race tickets on social media, saying her husband is a big Formula 1 fan and had talked about the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix since they met. In her post, she wrote: “My husband is a huge @F1 fan (he got me hooked) & has been talking about the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix since we met. So guess where I'm taking him as a present for his 30th birthday? Thaaaaaaat's right! Abu Dhabi here we come!!!!!!! He is so excited!”
The post quickly triggered reactions from Kenyan men, many of whom used it to complain that their own wives and girlfriends only give them ordinary birthday gifts such as socks and boxers, while expecting grand gestures in return.
Nyakundi Report has not independently verified the trip beyond the images and the social media post shared by the woman.
The reactions reflected a familiar online debate about birthday gifts, with the Zambian woman’s gesture being held up as an example of a more extravagant celebration.
