On Wednesday, November 21, 2018, Deputy President William Ruto pushed back against claims that he was spending more time on 2022 politics than on President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four agenda.
Ruto made the remarks in Narok County on Tuesday during the launch of a Universal Healthcare Program, where he said his countrywide visits were meant to advance development work rather than fuel political debate.
He insisted that critics should stop reading politics into his movements, saying the current focus should remain on service delivery and national projects.
“2022 is still far.”
“This is the time to work for the nation through development projects.”
“The issues that are there right now are not about politics, political parties or politicians.”
“The issues present right now are about development,” Ruto said.
The Deputy President also said that, as Uhuru’s foot soldier, he would work to help deliver the Big Four agenda so that the President could leave behind a strong legacy when his term ends in 2022.
His comments came amid growing scrutiny over his political positioning, with opponents accusing him of keeping one eye on the succession race even as the government pressed ahead with its development agenda.
