On 21 November 2018, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko said nurses who join the planned December 10 strike risk losing their jobs, as the county moved to recruit replacements.
The warning came after the nurses’ union issued a 21-day strike notice the previous day, saying the county had failed to pay service and uniform allowances. Sonko rejected the action as illegal, insisting the county had already complied with the signed CBA.
He said the county was in the process of hiring new nurses and that anyone who takes part in the boycott will be sent home.
Clinical Officers were also reported to be protesting separately over NHIF policies, which they say restrict the scope of services they are allowed to provide.
