Kenya Revenue Authority has moved to auction Bishop Margaret Wanjiru’s Toyota Prado after the vehicle remained uncollected at the Mombasa port, where it is listed among 568 cars facing sale.
In a notice dated 21 November 2018, KRA Port Operations Chief Manager Joseph Kaguru said the owners had 30 days to remove the vehicles from the custody of the Customs Warehouse Keeper, Kilindini, or face public auction.
The cars were scheduled for viewing on 17 and 18 December, with the notice warning that any goods not entered and removed within the stated period would be sold on 19 December 2018.
KRA said the vehicles had overstayed at the port and had accumulated damage costs in the process.
The former Starehe Member of Parliament has faced similar property recovery action before. Earlier in 2018, Gladson Auctioneers Limited was engaged by the Nairobi Water and Sewarage Company (NWSC) to recover Sh534,000.
That recovery effort followed a 2014 incident in which her son, Stephen Kariuki, also a former MP, damaged an NWSC vehicle and did not compensate the company. NWSC later obtained a court order allowing it to recover the money by auctioning properties belonging to the two.
