On November 21, 2018, a video circulating online showed gospel singer Rose Muhando during an exorcism led by controversial Pastor James Ng’ang’a, with the clip quickly triggering questions about what had happened to her career and health.
The footage portrayed Muhando as weak and distressed, and the online reaction focused heavily on claims that she had been out of the public eye for months and had not released new singles for years. The source also said she appeared with bruises on her feet and a bandaged left hand.
In the video, Ng’ang’a called Muhando to the altar and asked why the demons were “breaking your arms.” She then moved forward for prayer and collapsed in tears as the pastor continued the deliverance session.
Ng’ang’a is heard ordering the demons to leave, then asking how many there were and what they wanted. The voices in the clip answer: “We are ten demons. We have said she will not sing again. If she does, she spoils for all of us,” using Rose Muhando’s voice.
After the exorcism, Muhando is shown speaking about what she said had been happening to her. She said: “I was tired, for three months they took everything, I couldn’t even pay my children’s school fees. My manager told me, if I go back home, I will die. They dug a hole in my house and buried charms there.”
Ng’ang’a later told the congregation that he had not known why she had come to him, but said he realized she was not herself when she entered his office. He also said: “Don’t forget this is Rose Muhando, the popular and famous gospel star. [The demons] have burnt her hands and spoilt her face, she walked into my office and I couldn’t believe it is her. I gave her Ksh 5,000 and asked her to come to the service to be delivered.”
The clip ended with Ng’ang’a spraying her with a misty substance and telling her to sleep. Social media users questioned the video and suggested the pastor may have staged the entire exercise for publicity.
