On November 21, 2018, a Nakuru court deferred a decision on bond terms for Catherine Akinyi, who faces allegations of cruelty against her child.
The prosecution says Akinyi burned her stepdaughter with a hot iron box, causing grievous harm and injuring the girl’s health. According to the charge sheet, the minor was burned twice on November 14 at their home in the Manyani area of Nakuru East Sub-County.
Akinyi denied the allegations before Principal Magistrate Joe Omido, after which the matter was transferred to another trial court for hearing.
Prosecutors asked that she remain in custody until they were satisfied the victim was safe, and the court allowed that request at the time. When Akinyi later appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Victor Wakumile for a review of her bond terms, the hearing did not proceed.
The prosecution told the court it had not yet obtained the police file and asked for the review to be pushed to a later date. It also sought orders compelling the investigative officer to produce statements and the police report. The defence raised no objection.
The case was set to be mentioned on Friday, when the bond terms review would be revisited. Akinyi remained remanded at Bondeni Police Station.
The victim, who is 14, has since left the home where she had been living with the accused and gone to stay with her aunt.
