On 21 November 2018, a video circulated online showing a school bus from Kiriath-Jiam School in Utawala being driven at high speed on a busy highway with children exposed at the windows.
The footage showed some of the pupils hanging out of the windows, while one occupant appeared to be standing on a window and bracing himself against the rooftop. The scene raised immediate concern over the safety of the children on board.
It was believed the pupils were marking their school’s performance in the recently completed KCPE examinations. The incident also came as the government was pushing a crackdown on reckless road users.
Attempts by several local media houses to get a response from the school were unsuccessful after phone calls went unanswered.
