Nyakundi Report notes that the annual Kothbiro off-season football tournament in Ziwani, Nairobi, was underway on 21 November 2018, with organisers marking the event’s 40th anniversary. The grassroots competition has long been used to nurture local football talent.

This year’s edition has drawn 40 teams from different estates across Nairobi. Defending champions South B have had a difficult start and were facing possible elimination as the tournament moved through its early rounds.

One of the organisers, Issa, said the competition was still at an early stage but that the level of contest was already high. He added that the intensity was expected to rise as the teams advanced, while discipline on the pitch was also expected to remain strong.

The tournament has produced and inspired players who later featured for the national team and on the international stage, including Victor Wanyama, McDonald Mariga and Dennis Oliech.

Fixtures for Thursday, 22 November

  • 12.00 p.m. Nkoroi vs Kamukunji Falcons
  • 3.00 p.m. Masa vs FC Bundes
