On 21 November 2018, Kenya’s leading mobile network operators signed the Kenya Child Online Protection Industry Charter as the country marked World Children’s Day. The agreement was presented as a push to strengthen child online safety and promote more responsible internet use.

The charter is intended to support awareness programmes and to push companies to reflect children’s rights in their corporate policies. It was framed as part of wider efforts to make the online environment safer for young users.

Christopher Wambua of the Communications Authority said children face a high risk of exposure to unsafe internet environments. He said the Communications Authority and the government had been working to protect children from online dangers such as cyber bullying, stalking and destructive games that can lead to loss of life.

GSMA, working with Kenya’s mobile network operators, also launched the We Care Campaign that morning. According to the report, it was the first such campaign in Africa and the second in the world after a launch in Latin America.
