On 21 November 2018, police in Buruburu arrested 10 Cameroonians as Kenya’s crackdown on illegal migrants continued to widen across Nairobi.
Nairobi police boss Joseph Ole Mitito said the men did not have proper documentation to explain how they were in the country. Police said the group was headed for the Middle East, where they intended to look for work.
The arrests came days after officers picked up 169 foreigners in different parts of the city over the weekend. Immigration officials said all of those arrested would be deported from Wednesday.
Authorities said more than 1,800 foreigners had been arrested since the government launched the operation against illegal migrants.
The broader debate over migration also featured in a recent UN report, which ranked Kenya among the top five African countries with the highest number of immigrants from outside the continent. The report said Kenya was home to one million immigrants, placing it alongside Ethiopia.
According to the report, the large number was linked in part to Asians entering Kenya for work and later settling permanently.
