On July 18, 2019, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua took swift action to protect the health and safety of his constituents by shutting down the meat sections of all Naivas Supermarket outlets in Machakos County.

The decision came after a laboratory test on a sample of meat sold at Naivas Supermarket at Gateway Mall in Mavoko, Machakos County, allegedly found 3.286 milligrams of a harmful additive.

According to Mutua, the laboratory report showed that the sample of meat contained an additive that should not be used in meat, prompting him to take immediate action.

‘I have been given a laboratory report showing that a sample of meat sold at the Naivas Supermarket at Gateway Mall in Mavoko, Machakos County, had 3.286 milligrams of an additive that should not be used in meat,’ said Mutua in a statement.

Following the discovery, Mutua directed the closure of the meat/butchery sections of all Naivas stores in Machakos County, citing suspicion that the supplier of meat at all Naivas Supermarkets in Machakos County is the same entity.
