Donald Trump has submitted written answers to questions from Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election that brought Trump to office.
The development was confirmed on 21 November 2018, when attorney Jay Sekulow said the president had responded in writing to the special counsel’s office on matters tied to the Russia-related inquiry.
“The president today answered written questions submitted by the Special Counsel's office. The questions presented dealt with issues regarding the Russia-related topics of the inquiry,” Sekulow said, adding: “The president responded in writing.”
Trump also acknowledged that the responses were complete. He described the investigation as a “witch hunt” and repeated his denial of wrongdoing, saying: “The written answers to the witch hunt that's been going on forever -- no collusion, no nothing -- they've been finished, finished 'em yesterday,”
He added: “The lawyers have them. I assume they'll turn them in today or soon.”
The written submission came as Trump continued to attack Mueller’s work, which has focused in part on whether his campaign colluded with Russia. Earlier in November 2018, Trump fired attorney general Jeff Sessions and temporarily replaced him with Matthew Whitaker, who had been critical of the Mueller investigation.
Mueller’s probe remained one of the most closely watched political investigations in the United States, with the 2016 election at the center of the inquiry.
