Joseph Irungu, widely known as Jowie, was still at Kamiti Maximum Prison after the High Court denied him bail on October 30, 2018. The decision was made by Justice James Wakiaga in the murder case involving slain businesswoman Monica Kimani.
At the time, Jowie’s circle appeared thin. The report noted that very few of his friends had turned up for his court appearances or made efforts to visit him in custody, despite his public profile and links to Nairobi’s social scene.
One of the few people who did show support was Joe Muchiri, who visited Jowie at Kamiti a few weeks after the bail hearing. The two had long been known to move together around town and were often seen clubbing at popular joints.
The article also said they were regulars at Jiweke Tavern and had even set up a WhatsApp group for people who frequented the restaurant. The piece framed Muchiri’s visit as a rare show of loyalty at a time when Jowie was facing serious legal pressure.
After the visit, Muchiri posted on social media, writing:
“Not A Happy Birthday For Jowie?. Sigh.”
He also tweeted:
KAMITI IS NOT A JOKE.
When he later announced that he was in Kamiti, followers engaged him online and the conversation drew attention to the prison visit. The report did not indicate any other friends who had gone to see Jowie at the facility.
