Paul Gascoigne was charged on Wednesday, November 21, 2018, with one count of sexual assault by touching after an alleged incident on a train from York to Durham.
British Transport Police said the former England midfielder, 51, was charged in connection with an incident on board the train on August 20. The force said he was charged via postal requisition and that the allegation concerns a woman who was on the same service.
A police spokeswoman said: "A man is due to appear in court next month charged in connection with the sexual assault of a woman on board a train from York to Durham." She added: "Paul Gascoigne, of Leicester, was charged via postal requisition with one count of sexual assault by touching, contrary to Section 3 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003."
The charge under Section 3 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 relates to the 2003 legislation cited by police. Gascoigne is due to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court on December 11.
Gascoigne, known as Gazza, played for Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers and Everton. He became a national favourite after his performances for England at Italia 90, retired from playing in 2004 after a brief spell at non-league side Boston United, and took a short managerial role at Kettering Town the following year.
Since then, he has faced long-running battles with alcoholism and mental health issues. In August 2018, he cut short an appearance on Sky One's Soccer AM after feeling unwell following what he said was taking too many sleeping tablets the night before.
Last month, a nomination for him to join the Scottish Football Hall of Fame was withdrawn because of concerns over his health. Responding on Twitter, he said: "I played some of the best football in my career at Rangers and loved the support of the fans. "I don't need to be in the Scottish Hall of Fame to be recognised as one of the best. "I feel the love and support of the people and know I was the best. Love you all, Gazza xxx."
