Police in Bungoma county have launched a manhunt for a man accused of beating his 15-year-old daughter to death after she reportedly spent the night at her boyfriend’s house. The incident, reported on 21 November 2018, has left the girl’s mother in custody as investigators piece together what happened.
The deceased was a Kenya Certificate of Primary Examinations (KCPE) candidate whose identity had not been made public. According to reports, she died on Monday evening after sustaining severe injuries during the assault.
A neighbour, Michael Simiyu, told Nairobi News that the father attacked the teenager when she returned home after going missing on Sunday evening. Her parents had reportedly searched for her through the night before she resurfaced on Monday afternoon, after the KCPE results had been announced.
Simiyu said the girl was tied up by both parents before the beating, adding that they were worried she could become pregnant before finishing school. He said the assault was carried out in the afternoon.
Bungoma North OCPD Stephen Mwoni said the father used sticks and inflicted serious injuries on the girl’s abdomen. She was rushed to Ndalu Health Center, but she later succumbed to the injuries. Her body was moved to Kiminini Cottage Mortuary.
Police arrested the mother and took her to Ndalu Police Station while the father fled. Mwoni said officers were still looking for him and hoped the law would catch up with him soon.
