Nyakundi Report can confirm that former Gor Mahia coach Dylan Kerr moved quickly into a new role in South Africa after leaving the Kenyan champions in 2018. On Wednesday, November 21, 2018, reports indicated that the Englishman had joined Premier Soccer League side Black Leopards for an undisclosed period.
The club said on its Twitter account that Kerr arrived on Monday and was set to take over from Joel Masutha, who resigned the previous weekend after Black Leopards lost 3-1 to Cape Town City. His travel to South Africa on Monday had already fuelled speculation that the move was imminent.
Kerr’s arrival also raised the possibility of a raid on Gor Mahia’s squad. He had openly admired Francis Kahata and Philemon Otieno, and reports suggested he could try to sign both players once he settled in South Africa.
The coach had quit Gor Mahia the Thursday before, saying later that recurring back pain forced him out of the job. He explained that doctors had advised surgery, a procedure he said would keep him out of action for three months.
“I have had back pains for a long time and was advised to undergo surgery to rectify the problem. The procedure will take three months so I cannot be at Gor Mahia during that time and it is unfortunate I have to leave,” he said in an interview.
Kerr also said he was leaving without a contract in place because the club had delayed issuing one. His exit and immediate switch to Black Leopards marked a swift end to his Gor Mahia stint and set up a potential reunion with players he had previously praised.
